Primer on the Skin Barrier Special Report

Welcome to Elias and Williams. As professors of dermatology and skin scientists, we offer here A Primer on the Skin Barrier.  We hope you will both enjoy reading it and will find it helpful to your understanding of the skin and how it functions to keep us well. We have written it to be understandable to all readers who are curious to learn more about the skin and the skin’s barrier.

We believe that the material presented here, though basic to skin function, may nonetheless be new to skin professionals, from cosmetologists working to enhance the beauty of their client’s skin, to cosmetic scientists working to develop new skin care products, as well as to the broad community of medical professionals who treat skin and its disorders. It is our hope that many dermatologists, too, may find that some of this material will provide them with a new way to understand skin function that will prove to be useful in their clinical practice.
